Who can be added to the list?

To appear on this list you need to be a dragon artist, and have a website displaying your dragons. Your website does not have to be exclusively full of your original dragon art, but it should be easy to find your dragon artwork. It is acceptable to have a site with pictures unsuitable for children, but no pornography or hate sites please.

Commercial websites selling dragon art can be included, as long as the majority of the dragon art being sold is produced by the site owner, or the site is a collaboration between the listed artists and site owner (in other words, the site owner works directly with the artist, not buying prints from a printers or the like).

If you want to add your site to the list, send the information described below to weyr@polenth.com. If you haven't got the time to work out all the information, or simply don't know where to start, it is fine just to send your link. Keep in mind if you do just send a link, all the required information and pictures will be selected for you.

What needs to be sent?

Do not send any of this as a zip file, or other file compressing format. Attach all pictures just as they are (jpg or gif). The information on the list is...

  • Artist: Your name. This can be your 'internet name' rather than a real name.
  • Website: The name and URL of your site or sites.
  • The Picture: The sample picture should be representative of your art style, and should be suitable for all to view. There is no size limitation, but it is suggested to keep it fairly small, to make it easier for people to browse the list. As a rough guideline, the example picture (see the example entry at the bottom of this page) is 600x600 pixels. This is probably about as big as you want to get. Pictures should ideally be either jpgs or gifs.
  • Email: Your email address. If you want it spammed blocked, please mention it.
  • Notes about Artwork: The notes should be very brief, and not include phrases like 'The Best Art Site on the Net!!!'. If your artwork is unsuitable for those below a certain age, you must mention it in the notes section. Others things you may want to mention are if you sell any artwork, if you have free art for people to use, etc.
  • Thumbnail: A thumbnail of the picture is required. This should be exactly 100x100 pixels, and either a jpg or a gif. If you decide not to send a thumbnail, one will be made for you. The thumbnail must not be an animation, even if the sample picture is.
  • Banner: If you have a site banner, it can be included with your picture (click on the thumbnail in the example below to see this). If you do not have a banner, a text link will be used in its place.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can galleries provided by sites such as elfwood be included in the list?

Yes. As long as the art is suitable (mostly dragons, not a hate site, etc.) it does not matter who is hosting your page.

2. Can more than one site be listed for an artist?

Yes, you can send details for more than one site. In most cases, these will be combined into a single entry (so if Bob had a second site, it would be listed in the same box as 'Bob's Dragon Art Page'.) You might want to put a sentence in the 'Notes About Artwork' section saying how each site is different (for example, site A might have all the pictures you've done, and site B may only have the best pictures).

3. Do I have to do anything in return for appearing on the list?

No, you don't. Links to either the artist list or the main website are appreciated, but you do not have to provide a link.

4. Does 'easy to find' mean that my dragon pictures must be on a seperate page?

They do not have to be. Examples of other ways to organise might be:

  • A sorted list of pictures on a page, where dragons are listed together.
  • A search engine for the site, where entering 'dragon' brings up relevant picture results.

Easy to find does not mean if you know where they are, or remember to call dragons 'spgofi' in the search engine, they're easy to find. A stranger to the site should be able to work out where they are without needing to solve logic problems to get there.

5. Can the thumbnail be a different picture to the sample picture?

It is generally prefered if both images show the same picture. However, there are times that it might not work very well for an artist. For example, your picture looks like a bunch of random squiggles shrunk to 100x100, or is an animation that looks bad as a still frame. So long as you provide the different thumbnail image, it should not be a problem.

6. Will these pages appear in search engine results / count for Google PageRank?

Yes. These pages are all static content, meaning that the search engines have no problems with indexing them. All of the links are followable by Google (nothing is set to 'nofollow') so will be taken into account by Google's algorithms. The main thing is to make sure you keep your link up to date, by letting the webmaster know if your site moves.
