Leviathan is a creature which defies the power and skill of humans, according to the Bible. A good description of him can be found in Job 41. Some of his notable features are his back being made of a row of shields and his eyes glowing like the rays of dawn. He is said to breath fire and has smoke coming from his nostils.

Leviathan's nature is a matter of debate. It is known that he is a large sea creature of some sort. A whale is a popular suggestion, as the modern Hebrew word for whale is leviathan. Another popular suggestion is a crocodile, which matches the description of teeth and scales more closely.

The fantastical description in Job 41 does not neatly match any real creature. Whether the original writers intended to imply a real animal or not, leviathan has been interpreted in later times as a dragon-like sea monster.
