[ Return to Asian Dragons ]

Location:
Asia

Description:
Nagas appear throughout the region. There are two main appearances of nagas. They can either be shown as serpents or as serpents with human heads. The serpent nagas can have cobra features, such as cobra hoods.

The role of nagas is very variable. Some are connected with the weather or with rivers and lakes. This theme is seen in other parts of Asia. Others were guardians of treasure or palaces. They could be benevolent, offering teachings to humans. They could also be destructive, coming into conflict with the gods and killing people with their poisonous breath.
