[ Return to Asian Dragons ]

Location:
India, Asia

Description:
Vitra is a serpent-dragon from Vedic mythology. Vitra absorbed the cosmic waters, and then laid in coils apon the mountain side. Indra killed Vitra with his thunderbolts, releasing the waters. This represents the coming of the monsoon season. Vitra is the approaching storm cloud, holding the water inside. Indra killing Vitra is the storm cloud opening up and bringing the monsoon to the dry land.

Vitra is also known as Vritra, or Ahi (though the latter is sometimes distinct from Vitra). The Vedic tradition usually gets grouped with other traditions as Hinduism.
