These are the dragons and draconic hybrids which appear in heraldry. The wyvern and lindworm have been known to appear with different numbers of legs, and with or without wings, depending on the region and the era. The versions described here are the more standard ones.
The dragon is mainly found as rampant (usually called segreant), statant, and passant. On rare occasions it is displayed. It has four legs, a forked tongue, bat-like wings, a barbed tail, and scales.
A two legged dragon, which sits on its tail. The wyvern's pair of legs are forelegs. Wyverns are usually green with a red underside, and red insides of the wings. A variation of the wyvern is the sea-wyvern. This creature has a fish-like tail, instead of the standard wyvern tail. Other Dragon Stone Pages: European Dragons - Wyvern
Lindworms are usually legless, and winged. Sometimes they have scorpion tails, rather than the standard dragon barbs. Other Dragon Stone Pages: European Dragons - Lindworm
The cockatrice is a hybrid creature with a cock's head, comb and wattles, and a dragon's tail. Other Dragon Stone Pages: European Dragons - Cockatrice |
