Description:
Saint Benedict was a monk attributed with founding the Benedictine order of monks. His life was described by Saint Gregory in 'The Second Book of the Dialogues'. This was probably written some time after 590 AD, the year that Gregory became Pope. It is in this book that a story about a dragon (as the devil) is told.

The Reluctant Monk and the Dragon
It is said there was a monk in the abbey who had thoughts about leaving. He hassled St. Benedict constantly about wanting to be allowed to leave. Eventually St. Benedict had enough, and told him to go.

The monk walked outside the abbey, only to find a dragon waiting for him with its mouth open ready to eat him. Seeing the dragon, the monk called out for help.

The other monks rushed outside, but they could see no dragon. The monk that had left returned with them to the abbey, promising that he would not be lured by the dragon to leave the abbey again.
