[ Return to European Dragons ]
Location: Brno, Czech Republic
Description:
The city hall of Brno (also known as Brinn) has a stuffed dragon hanging
in an archway. This dragon is also known as the Brno lindworm or lindwurm.
The 'dragon' is not a dragon at all. It is a stuffed crocodile. There are a
number of legends about the origin of the dragon.
Presenting the Dragon
One legend says that the dragon was killed by Albrecht Trut at the
founding of the city. He later gave the stuffed dragon as a gift to
Prince Oldrich. Other stories have different people giving the dragon to
the city.
The Dragon and the Butcher
The dragon used to live in a cave by the edge of the River Svratka.
He would eat anything that came his way. The people of Brno did not
know what to do about it. A reward had been offered to kill the dragon,
but noone wanted to try and claim it.
There was a butcher who has been wandering the land. When he arrived
in Brno, he soon heard about the dragon. He asked for the skin of
an ox and some quicklime. After sewing the quicklime into the skin, he
heading to the dragon's lair. The butcher left the ox skin outside and waited.
Soon the dragon came out and ate down the bundle. The mixture made him thirsty,
so he drank some of the river water. The lime and the water started to react,
causing the quicklime to bubble and boil until the dragon exploded.
