Description:
A huge serpent with nine heads (although in some accounts she has seven or fifty heads). She lived at Lerna, in a pool formed by the Amymone spring. The Hydra was the half-sister of the Nemean Lion, and her accomplice was Cancer the Crab. She was killed by Herakles (also Heracles or Hercules), who had killed her half-brother, the Nemean Lion, previously. As soon as one of her heads was cut off two more grew, until Heracles commanded Iolaus to cauterize the wound with a hot iron.

The Hydra was the daughter of Echidna and Typhon.
