[ Return to European Dragons ]

Location:
Putsham Hill, Kilve, Somerset, England, Europe

Description:
Old Ben (or Blue Ben) was a dragon that lived on Putsham Hill in Kilve (Somerset). He was sometimes called upon to pull the Devil's chariot around Hell, and breathed fire. Old Ben wasn't slain by a hero... after going to cool down in the sea, he became trapped in the mud flats and drowned.

This is an unusual dragon story. Dragons are often very closely attached to water, and a story about being drowned is certainly fairly unique. As is dying from an accidental death. This may be due to it being a relatively recent item of folklore.

The skull of Old Ben was taken to a local museum. This has turned out to be an ichthyosaurus skull.
