Location:
New Zealand

Description:
Moko, or Mo'o is a Polynesian term meaning lizard or taniwha. It can refer to both Polynesian dragons (taniwha in the Oceania region) and any other lizard. Some taniwha, and other great lizards, have moko or mo'o in their names. Moko and Mo'o mean the same thing. Which is used depends on the region. The version of Polynesian spoken by the Maori favours the 'Moko' pronounciation.

Taniwha tends to be the most common term for a dragon in the New Zealand area. Moko/Mo'o becomes more common for the dragon meaning on some of the surrounding islands.
