Location:
Australia

Description:
Yingarna is the mother of creation, shown as a giant snake. The exact myth surrounding Yingarna varies.

The version of the Rembargna tribe of Arnhem Land is retold by Charles Hulley. Yingarna contained all of creation inside her, including all the animals, plants and mountains. She traveled from Macassar and tried to give birth to creation. It was not possible, and after a great effort, one man was born called Gorrogo. He stood watching for some time, as Yingarna continued to be in pain. Then he cut her open with a stone knife, allowing creation to be released. This began the Dreamtime. Gorrogo's task was complete, so he turned into a kookaburra.
