Quotation Source

These quotation references are from the NIV (New International Version) Bible. The NIV version used for this site was printed in 1990. This Bible is much easier to understand than older translations, which is why it was used for this study. The translation is also more accurate. Some of the potential 'dragons' of older translations are now known to be other animals found in the region, and not dragons at all. It is thought that the list is complete, but a few quotations may have been missed.

Genesis 3:1-5 The fall of man

1Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God made. He said to the women, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"

2The women said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'"

4"You will not surely die," said the serpent to the women. 5"For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good from evil."

Genesis 3:13-15 The serpent's punishment

13Then the Lord God said to the women, "What is this you have done?"

The women said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

14So the Lord God said to the serpent,

"Because you have done this,

"Cursed are you above all the livestock
and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
and you will eat dust
all the days of your life.
15And I will put an enmity
between you and the women
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel."

Genesis 49:16-17 Jacob blesses his sons

16Dan will provide justice for his people as one of the tribes of Israel.

17Dan will be a serpent by the roadside, a viper along the path, that bites the horse's heels so that the rider tumbles backwards.

Exodus 4:3-4 Signs for Moses

3The Lord said, "Throw it [the staff] on the ground."

Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it. 4Then the Lord said to him, "Reach out your hand and take it by the tail." So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand.

Exodus 7:9-12 Aaron's staff becomes a snake

9"When Pharaoh says to you, 'Perform a miracle', then say to Aaron, 'Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,' and it will become a snake."

10So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. 11Pharaoh then summmoned the wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts: 12Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs.

Exodus 7:15 The plague of blood

15Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes out to the water. Wait on the bank of the Nile to meet him, and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a snake.

Numbers 21:6-9 The bronze snake

6Then the Lord sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. 7The people came to Moses and said, "We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us." So Moses prayed for the people.

8The Lord said to Moses, "Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live." 9So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived.

Their wine is the venom of serpents, the deadly poison of cobras.

May those who curse days curse that day, those who are ready to rouse Leviathan.

Job 20:14-16 Zophar

14yet his food will turn sour in his stomach; it will become the venom of serpents within him. 15He will spit out the riches he has swallowed; God will make his stomach vomit them up. 16He will suck the poison of serpents; the fangs of the adder will kill him.

Job 26:13 Job

By his breath the skies became fair; his hand pierced the gliding serpent.

Job 41:1-34 The Lord Speaks: Leviathan

1"Can you pull in the leviathan with a fishhook
or tie down his tongue with a rope?
2Can you put a cord through his nose
or pierce his jaw with a hook?
3Will he keep begging you for mercy?
Will he speak to you with gentle words?
4Will he make an agreement with you
for you to take him as your slave for life?
5Can you make a pet of him like a bird
or put him on a leash for your girls?
6Will traders barter for him?
Will they divide him up among the merchants?
7Can you fill his hide with harpoons
or his head with fishing spears?
8If you lay a hand on him,
you will remember the struggle and never do it again!
9Any hope of subduing him is false;
the mere sight of him is overpowering.
10No-one is fierce enough to rouse him.
Who then is able to stand against me?
11Who has a claim against me that I must pay?
Everything under heaven belongs to me.

12"I will not fail to speak of his limbs,
his strength and his graceful form.
13Who can strip off his outer coat?
Who would approach him with a bridle?
14Who dares open the doors of his mouth,
ringed about with his fearsome teeth?
15His back has rows of shields
tightly sealed together;
16each is so close to the next
that no air can pass between.
17They are joined fast to one another;
they cling together and cannot be parted.
18His snorting throws out flashes of light;
his eyes are like rays of dawn.
19Firebrands stream from his mouth;
sparks of fire shoot out.
20Smoke pours from his nostrils
as from a boiling pot over a fire of reeds.
21His breath sets coals ablaze;
and flames dart from his mouth.
22Strength resides in his neck;
dismay goes before him.
23The folds of his flesh are tightly joined;
they are firm and immovable.
24His chest is hard as rock,
hard as a lower millstone.
25When he rises up, the mighty are terrified;
they retreat before his thrashing.
26The sword that reaches him has no effect,
nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin.
27Iron he treats like straw
and bronze like rotten wood.
28Arrows do not make him flee;
slingstones are like chaff to him.
29A club seems to him but a piece of straw;
he laughs at the rattling of the lance.
30His undersides are jagged potsherds,
leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing-sledge.
31He makes the depths churn like a boiling cauldron
and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.
32Behing him he leaves a glistening wake;
one would think the deep had white hair.
33Nothing on earth is his equal-
a creature without fear.
34He looks down on all that are haughty;
he is king over all that are proud."

Psalms 58:4-5 Do you rulers indeed speak justly?

5that will not heed the tune of the charmer,
however skilled the enchanter may be.

Psalms 74:13-14 Why have you rejected us...

13It was you who split open the sea by your power;

and gave him as food to the creatures of the desert.
