The nature of dreams is something that has been debated for a long time. Are dreams visions of the future or just the mind sorting things out during sleep? What significance is there to seeing something in a dream? These sorts of questions have many possible answers. It is unlikely that the experts will ever agree on one answer. This page explores some of the theories of dream analysis, focusing on the meaning of seeing dragons in dreams. Related dream images are also discussed, such as fire, monster lairs and flying.
Tom Corbett and Stearn RobinsonFrom 'The Dreamer's Dictionary' Stearn Robinson, Tom Corbett Their book is strongly of the leaning that dreams predict future events, and give advice on how to deal with these events. It does state that not all dreams are prophetic, and gives instructions on how to work out if your dream was prophetic or not. Dragons Mean: In the section on dragons it says that any appearance of a dragon is good news, as it means that someone powerful will help you achieve financial success. Related Issues: If you dream of a mythical dragon such as Tiamat, Fafnir, or Knucker, it is advising you that flattery will help you out in the future. Finding a dragon's lair is telling you that there is a coming obstacle that you will have to deal with. If the dragon is there in the den, you will be able to deal with the problem, but if the dragon isn't then consider other alternatives, such as backing off from the problem. If you're burnt by fire it's a sign of coming trouble. Magic is a common feature of dragons. Any occurrence of magic means unexpected changes are on their way. So what does it mean if you are a dragon? If you fly in your dreams it represents ambition. Targets can be easily achieved if you're flying at low or medium altitudes with no problems. Struggling to fly higher means that your targets are too ambitious. Nerys DeeFrom 'Your Dreams and What They Mean' Nerys Dee Nerys Dee believes that dreams are messages from ourselves to ourselves. In the analysis of dreams, only the dream should be focused on, not the dreamer. Unique, personal meanings for a dream item are more important than the dream dictionary definition. Dragons Mean: Dragons are symbolic of "Archetypal earthly force". They represents basic principles and the Great Mother. Related Issues: Flying is symbolic of being about to rise above earthly problems. From this it seems a fair analysis that a being a dragon in flight would be something to do with overcoming problems with the self (due to the earthly force (the dragon) overcoming earthly problems (flying)). Fire represents emotions and passions. More specifically, flames are uncontrolled emotions and passions. If smoke comes from the fire (or indeed appears on its own), it is a warning of coming danger. David FontanaFrom 'The Secret Language of Dreams' David Fontana Much of the dream analysis section of his book is based on Freudian and Jungian beliefs about dreams. Dragons Mean: Archetypal dreams involving magical quests or journeys usually are symbolic of the dreamer journeying into the subconscious, attempting to join together their psyche to gain a "...confidence and wholeness that can differentiate him or her from collective society." An example of this is a quest to slay a dragon. Related Issues: Fire can have two meanings. It either destroys, representing disruptive emotions, or cleanses, representing a new beginning. Flying unaided represents the higher self, sense of immortality, and the part of the dreamer that is above the limits of the material world, but only if flying comes with strong feelings of awe and power. Though animals usually have universal meanings, specific animals may have personal meanings to the dreamer. Therefore dreams of a familiar dragon may be nothing to do with any of the other interpretations of dragon. Carl JungFrom 'The Secret Language of Dreams' David Fontana Dragons Mean: The dragon is a primary symbol that is part of the Great Mother archetype. It represents the overbearing social aspect of the Great Mother. This must be slain to free the hero. |
