Amoeba Soup

[ Return to Nature Miscellany Index ]

This section is dedicated to amoebae and amoeboids. Amoebae are single celled organisms classified in Kingdom Protoctista, Phylum Rhizopoda. Unlike some protists, they do not photosynthesize, and have no cell wall. Amoebae have a fluid structure, and move around by projecting temporary structures, called pseudopodia, in the direction they want to go. This cavern covers all amoeba species, both naked (no kind of covering) and testate (covered in a test, or 'shell').

An amoeboid resembles an amoeba in some way, such as the way it moves, or its general structure. Not all amoeboids are singled celled organisms - some amoeboids are part of larger organisms.

Amoeba (a-mee-ber, or, a-mee-bah) is the term for a single amoeba. This can also be spelt ameba. There are two plurals of amoeba which are amoebae (a-mee-bee), and Amoebas (a-mee-bers). This cavern uses the plural amoebae throughout.
