This is the scientific classification of jaguarundis. Placing the jaguarundi in the genus Felis is the most common classification. However, some place jaguarundis in the genus Herpailurus. Where it is recognised, the jaguarundi is the only species in Herpailurus.

There are eight known subspecies of jaguarundi.
