Classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Porifera
Cell Types
Unlike other animals, sponges do not have cells differentiated to form organs. Instead, they have three sorts of cells:
- Pinacocytes - cover the outer surface of the sponge.
- Choanocytes - cover the inside layer of the sponge.
- Amoebocytes - move around in the sponge.
Amoebocytes are the amoeboids. They have various jobs, such as food storage, producing gametes (or other reproductive cells), and producing spicules (the skeleton of the sponge).
